Pet Food Grinding – J-Six Enterprises

Fairview Mills, a division of J-Six Enterprises, uses a variety of equipment such as hammer mills, flakers, and grinders to turn any pet food ingredient into a medium to fine grain meal. These food meals can be sold as they are, often to livestock farmers. There, these meals can be mixed in with various roughages as a nutritional supplement by pet food manufacturers. Most frequently, however, our pet food grinding mills and food grinder are used to turn pet food ingredients into the format needed for pet food grinding, blending and extrusion. Below, we’ll discuss our electric meat grinder and pet food grinding process, and what we do with the meal after processing!

Our Pet Food Grinding Process

Fairview Mills uses industrial strength shredders as our first step in approaching raw pet food ingredients, such as thawed proteins, bones, and frozen blocks of fruits and vegetables for a healhty diet with vitamins and antioxidants. These powerful grinders break down these toughest of ingredients to the proper size for the next series of grinders.

Following the initial shredders, we utilize a series of high-speed, dual-shafted grinders that can grind any ingredients down to your specifications. Our pet food grinders have a wide range of cutting chamber openings and cutter configurations, allowing us to create the particle size you require.

Typically, our pet food grinding process involves pouring the ingredient material into the center of the grinding chamber, where it is then impacted by the bladed rotor. This rotary action continues, cutting the ingredients and pressing them against the stationary grinding surfaces, until the particle size is reduced sufficiently to pass through the bottom of the mill. This bottom chamber is interchangeable, depending on the size of particle desired.

Our grinding facility handles a diverse range of ingredients, and it’s critical that we are able to keep those ingredients free from contamination and moisture with anything that might hinder accurate product production. Without traceability, issues with the final product can lead to investigations by the Food Standards Agency. Due to a growing number of expensive recalls and quality complaints, companies and consumers alike are calling for increased traceability. J-Six Enterprises is happy to oblige! We have invested in electronic supply chain and manufacturing traceability solutions to help you better manage these risks, such as grinding modules that keep track of all production lot numbers, in both the pre-grind and post-grind stages.

What Comes AFTER Pet Food Grinding?

Pet Food Grinding

The ground pet food meals can be sold as they are, often to livestock farmers. There, these meals can be mixed in with various roughages as a nutritional supplement. Most frequently, however, our pet food grinding mills are used to turn pet food ingredients into the format needed for blending and extrusion.

Pet Food Milling

For most products, however, the pet food ingredient will need further size reduction, classifying, or cleaning. So, the meal made from our pet food grinding machines is then taken to our pet food milling facilities, where it is further refined through rollers and air classifiers into a fine grain meal, ready for blending.

Quality Control

Throughout the entire pet food grinding and pet food milling processes, sifting belts help separate the usable pet food meal from the unusable chaff and dust. We want to make sure that only the highest quality pet food ingredients are used in making your large scale product or small test batch!

Pet Food Blending and Pet Food Processing

Once the raw pet food ingredient and raw materials have been ground and milled to the appropriate particle size, it typically is then blending with other ground ingredients to create the specific nutrient profile the customer desires. Fairview Mills pet food market offers both large scale pet food blending and smaller batches for product testing. We test every product that comes through our pet food blending process in our analytics lab. In the lab, we test your product for specific parameters, such as toxin testing, peroxide value, and nutrition analysisto ensure proper shelf life and pet food protection.

From Grinding To Extrusion

Once the raw pet food ingredient has been ground, milled, and blended, it typically enters our pet food extrusion process. Pet food extrusion is one of the fastest-growing segments in the food industry. All manners of kibbles, wet pet food, dry pet foods, and pet treats are created through extrusion.

Pet Food GrindingThe extrusion process positively affects the nutritional profile and health benefits of the pet food itself! Extruding affects protein digestibility by denaturing the proteins. This particularly contributes to better utilization of plant proteins. The heat used in the extrusion process also decreases the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids are an essential nutritive component to many pet’s diets, so it’s important to process pet foods that reduce the amount of oxidation that occurs. The process of extrusion also alters the conformation of starch, reducing the glycemic index of grain-based pet foods. Extrusion also improves the amount of soluble dietary fiber, reduces the total calories, destroys anti-nutrient components, and increases the growth of resistant starch.

Our pet food extrusion process is completely customizable to fit your animal feed needs. Following the exact parameters of your pet food product, our pet food manufacturing company will add the liquid content you desire to the dry food during the blending process, and move your blend through our series of extruders. We will achieve the exact size and shape of the extruded product that you desire before flash baking.
